Description

Markarian’s Chain (on the right hand side of the frame) is an often imaged part of the Virgo galaxy cluster. It is named after Beniamin Egishevich Markarian (1913-1985) – an Armenian astrophysicist.

This is an 8 panel mosaic. To the left of the 'chain' is a circular pattern of galaxies. Olly Penrice once described the combination as the 'Ball and Chain' - a description I liked.

The centre of the Virgo cluster has been determined to lie some 70 million light years distant.

Data for the mosaic were collected between 28 March and 9 June 2019 from a remote imaging rig in Spain that is owned and operated by Barry Wilson and me.
