Description

This object is a small, strongly barred spiral galaxy located 65 million light-years away in the constellation of Serpens. The galaxy is 5 arc-minutes in apparent size to us. It is about the same true size as our Milky Way, at 100,000 light years in diameter.

The bar section is fascinating to me. The bar is much longer and narrower than most others I have seen. Faint dust lanes are visible, highlighted by a pair of tiny symmetric arc-shaped sections on each side of the core. The strong, well defined inner galaxy arms contrast well with the fragmented outer arms, which contain numerous bright blue star clusters.

A few interesting tiny spiral galaxies are visible in the background.
