Description

Jupiter in the evening of Sat 15 Jun 2019 AEST.

Decided to catch the planet this weekend while it is still at its closest. Was disappointed with the weather over past couple of weeks (including opposition night on the 10th) and my attempts to image gas giant in poor conditions. This time though seeing was near perfect which allowed me to fine tune collimation and record good quality data. This effort is from Saturday night just before the fog rolled in at 10pm LT, yet to crunch through Friday SERs.

Despite ordinary jetstream forecast I was amazed how much detail was present on a live FireCapture feed. With temperature dropping rapidly and high humidity all round I have kept AstroZap heater going at maximum to avoid corrector plate dew - Telrad cover was completely wet near the end of the session. Fog did not lift for the GRS transit but pretty happy to get this view of Oval BA hemisphere.

Looking at these results compared to what I was achieving lately I have a strong suspicion that my optics were not properly aligned in May. I tweaked the collimation on Friday so it should hold for a while hopefully.. Rig operation is semi automated now and I am controlling the mount from indoors but one thing that I still need to enable is FireCapture autotracking - Skyris does not have autoguider port so thinking of purchasing a USBST4 converter.. not sure how successful this will be in AltAz, will see.
