Description

As a continuation of my "famous Hubble images" series I captured M20 the Trifid Nebula. Hubble imaged this one in 1997 using the famous and well-known Hubble Palette filters (Ha, SII, OIII). It is approximately 5,000 light years from Earth and has an apparent magnitude of 6.3. The Trifid is located towards the center of our galaxy which is why there are so many stars visible in this image (originally I thought I had a TON of noise haha). This is one of my favorites because my single shot CCD color camera was able to pick up the Ha and OIII regions of the nebula which I was then able to bring out even more prominently. The term "Trifid" means "divided into 3"; it's easy to see where this nebula gets its name from (there are three distinct regions). I hope you enjoy!
