Description

The Veil Nebula is a cloud of heated and ionized gas and dust in the constellation of Cygnus. The Veil nebula was a supernova (exploding star) remnant, and record of the expanding debris. The source supernova was a star 20 times more massive than the Sun, which exploded around 8,000 years ago, and a distance of about 1,470 light-years away. The remnants have since expanded to cover an area of the sky roughly 3 degrees in diameter or about 6 times the diameter, of full Moon.

The image is centered on a western segment of the Veil Nebula cataloged as NGC 6960 and the upper part of this image is known as the Witch's Broom Nebula.
