Description

A test image of M101 and its surroundings taken with the Canon EF-S 50 mm lens fully open at F 1.8 and a makeshift "semi-narrowband" Ha filter obtained by pairing a Baader Fringe Killer and an Astronomik 642 IR Pass filter.

Together they give a 35 nm wide window (642-677 nm) almost centered on the H-alpha line at 656 nm.

There is some field rotation at the borders because I took advantage of the short focal length to push exposures to 2 minutes each.

I'm looking forward to use this setup (also with the 135 mm sometimes taking the place of the 50 mm) with nebulas, which of course are its natural target, however I could also try some more experimentation with big bright galaxies like M33 or M31.

I also add that this experiment shows that with a proper telescope (i.e. an appropriate aperture) this technique could also be used to image galaxies from highly light polluted environments with a certain success.

I was indeed surprise of "how much" of M101 I was able to obtain with what essentially is a 28 mm aperture at best.

For instance NGC5474 can really be "perceived" in the picture: it is intriguing to think what could be done with even just 80-100 mm of aperture, let alone bigger stuff.
