Description

The North America Nebula (NGC 7000) is about 1,500 light-years away, located in the Orion Arm of the Milky Way, in the constellation Cygnus. The portion of the nebula resembling Mexico and Central America is known as the Cygnus Wall which even has a small “canal” in the area where Panama would be in the continent the nebula resembles. The wall exhibits the most concentrated star formation of the nebula and spans about 20 light years in length appearing as a W-shaped ridge.

The image is constructed using ~8 hours of 6nm narrowband data (Sulphur-II, Hydrogen alpha, and Oxygen-III) and combined using what is most commonly referred to as "the Hubble Palette" which is a false color imaging process used to obtain more information about features that are not easily obtained through visual observation, mapping RGB channels as R=SII, G=Ha, and B=OIII. Data was collected over 2 nights using a 1000mm Newtonian telescope. 1 hour of RGB (true color) data was also captured and used to blend back into the stars of the final narrowband image to maintain more natural colors in the stars.
