Description

Messier M17 and as NGC 6618 The Omega Nebula, also known as the Swan Nebula, Checkmark Nebula, Lobster Nebula, and the Horseshoe Nebula. M17 is located in the rich starfields of the Sagittarius area of the Milky Way and one of the largest star-forming regions in the Milky Way Galaxy.  M17 is around 5,000 and 6,000 light-years from Earth and it spans some 15 light-years in diameter. The cloud of interstellar matter of which this nebula is a part is roughly 40 light-years in diameter. M17 contains one of our galaxy’s youngest star clusters, at only 1 million years old. However, many of the young stars in this cluster are impossible to see because of the gas and dust that surrounds them.
