Description

A jewel in the south: a composition with Mimosa (Beta Crucis) and The Jewel Box Cluster (Kappa Crucis)

In this telescopic photographic view, using a 1000d DSLR camera and a GSO Newtonian Telescope, 150mm F5,5 with comma corrector, was possible to put together in the same frame the bright Mimosa in the upper left corner and the Jewel Box Cluster, in the lower right corner.

Mimosa is 280 ly away from the Earth, has 16 times more mass than the Sun and is White-bluish. The most interesting fact in this photo, is the beautiful presence of the reddish Rubi Crucis, just above Mimosa. It is a red carbon Star. Later I will work on this region to put this star in evidence.

The Jewel Box Cluster (NGC 4755) is away from the Earth 7500 ly. It is necessary at least a binoculars to distinguish the stars in the cluster. The centermost star is a red supergiant, surrounded by white/bluish neighbors. The cluster contains around 100 stars and is 10 million years old.
