Description

The Lagoon Nebula is a star-forming cloud of interstellar gas classified as an emission nebula and HII region in the constellation of Sagittarius within the Milky Way Galaxy. The massive stars embedded within the nebula give off enormous amounts of ultraviolet radiation, ionizing the gas and causing it to shine. The Lagoon Nebula is estimated between 4,000 to 6000 light-years away and its apparent magnitude of 6 makes it faintly visible to the naked eye in dark skies. Its size spans 90’ by 40’ or dimension of 110 by 50 light years. It was discovered in 1654 by the Italian astronomer Giovanni Battista Hodierna
