Description

The Trifid nebula is an H II region located in Sagittarius. It is a very unusual combination of an open cluster of stars, an emission nebula (red section), a reflection nebula (blue section), and a dark nebula that forms the apparent gaps within the emission nebula that cause the trifid appearance. This dark nebula is also designated as Barnard 85. The Trifid is approximately 5000 light years from Earth, shines at magnitude 6.3, and at 28 arcminutes across it appears almost as large as the full Moon in our night sky.
