Description

This Globular Cluster is known as NGC 5139 (also known as Caldwell 80) Omega Centauri. It is located in constellation Centaurus in the southern hemisphere. Omega Centauri is the largest and brightest globular cluster in our galaxy, the Milky Way. It is 15,800 light years from earth with several million Population II stars. Omega Centauri is one of the few globular clusters visible to the naked eye and appears about as large as the full moon. First identified in 1677 by Edmund Halley as a nebula, but later recognized as a globular cluster by John William Herschel.
