NGC 253, in the Southern Constellation Sculptor, is the most prominent member of the Sculptor Group of galaxies. This group is the closest to our own group, and lies approximately 8M light-years from us. It is an eight-magnitude object, and can be seen in binoculars.

Numerous areas of star-birth occur in the Sculptor Galaxy, which largely appear blue, because of the young blue stars being formed, or red, where young stars ionize their parental hydrogen clouds. Being such an active star-birth galaxy, it has be cataloged as a ‘Star-Burst’ galaxy.

NGC 253 was discovered by Caroline Herschel, the sister of William Herschel, September 23, 1783.
