Description

Description

The Saturn Nebula is a planetary nebula in the constellation of Aquarius, about 4-5,000 light years away. Its name is derived from its unusual shape, which reminds one of the beautiful, ringed planet Saturn.

The complex nebula contains many different features, including a halo, jet-like stream, multiple shells, and ansae (Latin for "handles"). These features are annotated in the image.

The central star is a very hot, low-mass white dwarf star.

The Saturn Nebula was the first planetary nebula where dust distribution was mapped in detail. This study was carried out by the ESO using the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) on the Very Large Telescope (VLT).

The study discovered that while dust is distributed throughout the nebula, there is a significant drop in the amount of dust at the rim of the inner shell (which marks an expanding shock wave). It appears that the dust is being destroyed in this region.

Processing

The RGB channels were enhanced by blending Ha data into the L and R channels, and Oiii data into the G and B channels. This helped bring out the ansae more clearly and also resulted in better definition of the inner shell.
