Description

Messier 17 is between 5,000 and 6,000 light-years from Earth and is some 15 light-years in diameter. Its total mass is about 800 solar masses and it is one of the brightest and most massive star forming regions in our galaxy.

The open cluster NGC 6618 is embedded in the nebulosity and it is the radiation from these young hot stars that light up the gases of the nebula.
