Description

Visitied the E.C. Carr Astronomical Observatorya few weeks ago near Blue Mountain. This is a very nice location for astronomers with such a nice facility. I had so much fun touring the site and meeting some new astronomers.

The night sky conditions were supposed to be perfect, two days of clear forecast and no moon. However when I got there the news of smoke fires from Manitoba started spreading. We checked the firesmoke.ca website and could see smoke clouds coming. We could see the dark bands in the distance and as it got darker they kept creeping closer. Most people left it and it was just me and my buddy who remained and had the whole place to ourselves.

We were setup and just watched the clouds cover everything, we started taking a few moon shots while we waited for total darkness. It got so bad that I could barely see the big dipper stars. I couldn't even guide in the southern horizon, no stars. My buddy Jeff went to bed, so I was all alone at a prime astro site covered with smoke.... I thought of something bright and M13 came to mind. I switched targets and it was fairly high, guiding was possible again and when the first sub came in I was really surprised that it was ok! I decided to keep going and get as much as I could.

When I processed it, I was very happy with the results given the conditions. We didn't stay a second night due to the smoke but I can't wait to go back.
