Description

Messier 16, imaged during late July - early August 2019.

The raw data was too low., even though I used my standard ISO640 - 30 sec setting. The only way to get something meaningful was to apply a tone curve function to the raw files using Rawtherapee. In other words the subs were converted to non-linear.

This is a shame because the data could benefit a great deal from dark and bias substraction (flats are unnecessary, thanks to the excellent optical field flattener): the ultra dark sky was well below the fixed pattern noise of the sensor, which had never been the case in my usual suburban setting, where taking just one dark and subtracting it from every frame in Rawtherapee is sufficient to get rid of hot pixels, pretty much the only noise that goes above light pollution.

In other words, the dark location proved a bit too dark for me. I know this is a bit embarassing but hey, at least I will know better next time
