Description

Sharpless 119 is a large emission nebula covering about three degrees of the sky in the constellation Cygnus. It is not often photographed, likely the result of its proximity to its photogenic neighbors, the North America and Pelican nebulas, just two degrees east. The large, bright star in left of center is is 68 Cygni. I framed this image to highlight the Bok globules and dark dust lanes in the southern region of the nebula.

While I found that the Ha emission signal for this nebula was reasonably strong, I found the SII was much weaker, and the OIII was very faint, yielding very little structure. My challenges to gathering these data were exacerbated by the nearly full Moon. On the positive side, I enjoyed four successive days of clear skies. All together I amassed more than 24 hours of data, 14 hours of good-quality Ha alone.
