Description

This object is a bright blue reflection nebula located 700 light years away in the constellation of Scutum. The nebula spans about 20 arc-minutes and is about 4 light years wide. The nebula is illuminated by the magnitude 5.5 star HD 170740.

I find the mottled appearance of this nebula to be fascinating. I am especially surprised at the varying shades of blues and the different brightness levels throughout the nebula. Sort of reminds me of a mini-Pleiades. The field is very orangish and dusty, so the background stars do not appear to have much color.
