Description

The ‘Leo Triplet’ consists of Messier 65, Messier 66 and NGC 3628 – galaxies located around 30-35 million light years from Earth. Stretching out from NGC 3628 for around 300,000 light years is a ‘tidal tail’ – an elongated region of stars that arises as a result of gravitational interaction between galaxies.

This object was imaged from our home observatory in Spring of 2019. We had hoped to collect a bit more data, but ran out of time due to adverse weather. Data collection took place between 25 March and 3 April 2019.

The tidal tail proved somewhat elusive, but is present lower left. We decided to shoot a small number of Ha subs. There was a little Ha signal present, and this was most prominent in Messier 66 (NGC 3627).

Ha: 8 x 1200s

Lum: 24 x 600s

Red: 16 x 600s

Green: 14 x 600s

Blue: 16 x 600s

A total of 14 hours and 20 minutes exposure.
