Description

This object is a dark nebula located in the constellation of Scutum at a declination of -15 degrees. The object spans about 1.5 degrees in our apparent view.

Like most dark nebulae, this object is not well researched or documented in the literature. I could not find a distance estimate for this object, but at a typical dark nebula distance of 1000 light years, this object would be 25 light years wide. The tiny inky dark spot towards the top of the image is identified as both LDN 372/374, while the open star cluster just to the right of this dark spot is Ruprecht 171.

Thick dust is causing two effects in this image - obscuring the majority of the background stars in the nebula area, and creating an orangish hue in the surrounding area. The number of background stars in this region of the sky is amazing. I love the stark contrast between the deep dark black of the central nebulae area and the bright starry background of the surrounding region.
