The (first) Planets: Jupiter with Io, Saturn, Mars

One night of a clear cold sky, wet and windy with a full moon, but I couldn’t resist quickly bringing out the scope. A quick re-modelling of my daytime solar telescope, the TS102/1100 Achromat, now with the ASI178MC and Barlow (2x, 3x) and UV/IR filter

The first images were of the fringes of the full moon (see previous posts), but then I switched over to the planets. Jupiter rising high in the sky, lots of seeing though. A bit too late in switching over to Saturn, low on the horizon with the clouds catching up, Saturn was already dimmed by the clouds, moments later it wasn’t visible to the naked eye anymore. And then lastly, a quick catch of Mars, small in the scope but the regions quite noticeable.

My first ‘real’ trip to the planets, as a learning to catch this with the C11 later on. A bit too high on the magnification, details dampened by the seeing, edges and details not crystal sharp, but I’m happy with this first achievement. A new step into a new chapter of Astrophotography…

My first trip to the planets, not the perfect view, but already promising. These image have helped me to test the limits of my telescope, which is basically dedicated to solar and lunar (mono). These are the groundworks to do planetary on my bigger scope, understanding the exposures and imaging-flow, tuning the processing … looking forward to the future …

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
