Description

Charles Messier's first cataloged object awed the Chinese, Arabic and Indian astronomers as a bright supernova in 1054 A.D. Today the remnant is known for being one of the strongest persistent source of gamma and X-ray emissions, and for being one of the first documented pulsars in 1968. The nebula is ~6500 light years distant in the constellation of Taurus. It is 11 light years across.
