Description

I shot this image of the Helix Nebula, NGC 7293, as one of my first planetary nebulae. The central star is at the end of its life, destined to become a white dwarf. In the meantime, its glow illuminates the gasses it has ejected. The nebula is 700 light years away, and about 2.5 light years across.

This was a one-shot color CCD on a modest 150 mm refractor and a 2 MP SBIG ST-2000XCM camera, comprising 12 images of 600 seconds each.
