Description

This Messier object is a spiral galaxy located 40 million light years away in the constellation of Coma Berenices at a declination of +14 degrees.  It looks face-on to us but that is an April Fools' Day illusion - is actually about halfway between face-on and edge-on.

This is a magnitude 10 galaxy which spans 6 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 75,000 light years.  It is the 78th brightest galaxy in the sky.

The galaxy structure is asymmetric - one fully formed arm on the bottom balanced by 3 distorted arms on the top.  The core is off-center towards the bottom. This is likely the result of interactions with other galaxies in the Virgo Cluster.  Many blue star clusters and pink HII regions seen in the galaxy arms. The arms are slightly kinked, indicating the presence of VV rows.
