Description

It is called Pickering's Triangle, named for Charles Pickering, the director of Harvard College Observatory, cataloged NGC 6979, and part of the Veil Nebula complex. It has been argued that this object should really be called Flemming's Triangular Wisp since it was identified by Pickering's assistant, Williamina Flemming. She is credited with discovering 10 novae, over 310 variable stars, and 59 gaseous nebulae (citation Steve Cannista, Universe Today).

This is an SHO/RGB rendition of data collected in 2019 (Yes, the sky here in Monterey, CA is still blanketed by coastal fog and wildfire smoke). I originally published an HOO/RGB version of these data. The sky conditions were wildly inconsistent during the period the data were acquired and while more than 20 hours were collected, I used only 11.5 hours of sub lights in this image, subs with HFR <2.5. For this SHO/RGB rendition I created a master luminance using the Ha and OIII data sub with HFR <2.0. I quieted the noise and accentuated structural details in the master luminance using successive rounds of low-iteration Multiscale Median Transform and Deconvolution.
