Description

A few cloudless and moonless nights last week and I was able to image this trio of galaxies in Leo from suburban Perth.

All three of these galaxies are similar distances away - around 32 million light-years, and show some of the different morphologies galaxies display. The rightmost one is named M105, and was the only one noticed by Charles Messier in the 18th century. This is a classical elliptical galaxy and is very well studied. The top one, NGC 3384 is a barred elliptical, and the one low left is a normal spiral galaxy. Some of the faint star forming regions in NGC 3389 are visible as pink spots on it's arms, and intriguingly it looks like a classical spiral shape, without the usual tidal distortions you'd expect when so close to the other massive elliptical galaxies.
