Description

Researchers at Stanford University have developed a method that allows them to predict the appearance of spots on the Sun a day or two in advance. Analyzing data from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (Soho), spacecraft owned by NASA and ESA (the European space agency), astrophysicist Stathis Ilonidis and his colleagues at the University of California found that the detection of intense magnetic fields in an inner region of the star, located 65 thousand kilometers below its surface, is indicative of the imminent appearance of the spots (Science, August 19, 2011). The phenomenon manifests itself inside the star and moves to its outside at speeds between 0.3 and 0.6 kilometers per second. The spots tend to appear no later than 48 hours after magnetic fields of this magnitude have been detected.
