Description

This image captures a series of objects located in the constellation of Orion at a declination of +12 degrees.

The red emission nebula is the northernmost extent of Sh2-264. This nebula, nicknamed "Orion's Head" for its location at the top of the Orion constellation, is over 3 degrees in diameter. Most of this nebula is off screen, with the center located above the image.

The blue reflection nebula is Cederblad 51, located about 1300 light years away. This nebula is 3 arc-minutes in diameter, which corresponds to a width of just over 1 light year. The nebula is surrounded by the large dark nebula which is designated as Barnard 30.

The final object is the most interesting, and one of a number of Herbig-Haro objects in this area. HH176 is the tiny but distinct red spot at the center of the Cederblad 51 nebula. This object is seen in the full resolution view.
