Description

NGC 1999 is a reflection-type nebula. This nebula is illuminated by a newly formed star and is still surrounded by clouds of matter from its formation, seen as a reflection nebula.
In the center of the nebula there is a dark spot shaped like the letter T, it is a Bok globule, a cold cloud of gas and dust, so dense that it blocks all the light behind it. Research indicates that there are stars forming inside the globule, through the contraction of molecular gases and dust under its own gravity.
NGC 1999 is situated 1500 light years away in the constellation Orion, on the side of M42.
