Description

This object is a pair of galaxies located in the constellation of Coma Berenices at a declination of +15 degrees. Although they appear close to each other, they are widely spread apart in distance and show no signs of disturbance. I like the color contrast of the 2 galaxies.

NGC 4298 is the blue 11.3 magnitude flocculent galaxy on the right. Located 40 million light years away, it spans 3 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual diameter of 40,000 light years.

NGC 4302 is a 11.6 magnitude exactly edge-on (90 degree) galaxy. Located 60 million light years away, it spans 6.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual diameter of 120,000 light years. The long, meandering dust lane along the length of this galaxy is my favorite part of the image.
