Description

This is my first narrowband image using the Baader hydrogen-alpha and oxygen III filters.

I used:

1- Ha data in the luminance channel

2- Ha data in the red channel

3- O-III data in the blue channel

4- Green channel empty

For the green channel, I will get the S-II later.

The green channel was left empty, and at this point I am not sure if oxygen data should go in the green channel.

The learning curve is steep in transitioning from osc to narrowband monochrome image processing. I wish to thank Mr. Uwe Deutermann for his help with this project.

Stacking of mono fits images is very different than osc fits file and I had to figure out a few things with Deep space stacker (DSS). What may not be obvious in DSS, is when you select a reference frame, that reference frame will apply to other groups, in my case the Oxygen III data. I guessed that part, and my Ha and O-III fit files where aligned, except for perhaps 50 pixels at the border.

With mono images, each group (ie. HA, O-III) must be processed separately with the flats acquired for each filters. I stacked, the Ha grey files with darks, ha-flats and bias files. The ha stacked files are saved as the ha-fits. Followed by oxygen data, in DSS, I deselected the Ha lights, and Ha flats, but kept the darks and bias files selected and stacked the oxygen group lights, and oxygen flats to create a Oxygen-III grey stacked file.

If you started your journey with osc, be prepared to have a few learning when going into creating the different grey files for each of the channels, luminance-red-green and blue.
