Description

Here we have my crack at NGC5746, a very beautiful nearly edge-on spiral galaxy in Virgo. The galaxy lies somewhere between 78 and 98 million light years away. The galaxy has an apparent diameter of about 7.4 arcmin. The NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database shows a diameter of about 194,000 light years which makes it a pretty big galaxy.

I imaged this over several nights and decided to try to do a little bit of a HDR type of process on the luminance capture. I wanted to try to pull a little bit of detail out of the disk which I thought might be somewhat similar to what can be done with M104. That seemed to work pretty well although I am now wondering if drizzling might help achieve more detail.

Also had to throw away a whole 5-hours of additional L data because somehow, I lost my collimation. A mystery to me still, lol...

Processing was not difficult, my goals were to bring out some detail in the galactic disk and capture as much of the tiny background galaxies as I could and not worry about the size of the stars that oversaturated. Interesting how many tiny galaxies are in the field that do not even appear to have PGC designations.

Anyway, a fun project I hope you like it! Comments/criticism always welcome...

CS and good health!
