Description

This small Abell PN, also known as PK9+10.1, is located 15,000 light years away in the constellation of Serpens at a declination of -15 degrees.  It is a magnitude 16 elliptical PN which spans 24 arc-seconds in our apparent view.  This corresponds to the typical PN diameter of 2 light years.

In apparent size, this is the smallest Abell PN.  Not coincidentally, it is also one of the furthest away from us.

The peak HII signal strength here is about twice that of the peak OIII strength.  As usual, the HII is dominant along the rim. The binary blue progenitor star at the center is clearly visible.  The binary progenitor results in the elliptical PN type.
