Description

This is a small, rarely imaged HII region located 30,000 light years away in the constellation of Cygnus at a declination of +34 degrees. The bright area in the center of the image is about 1 arc-minute in diameter, which corresponds to a diameter of 9 light years.

This bright area is classified as both NGC 6857 and PK 70+1.2. As you might guess from the classification, this area was originally thought to be a planetary nebula. It is now believed that this is an HII region, as is the surrounding dimmer HII region, Sh2-100. In my opinion, the detail of this image shows that this bright area is unlikely to be a PN, since the structure is unlike any PN that I have seen. Also, its size of 9 light years is too large for a bright PN.

There is a planetary nebula in this image, but it is not NGC 6857. Just 1 arc-minute below NGC 6857 is a tiny circular bright red area which is planetary nebula K 3-50.

Towards the bottom left of the image is an interesting half circular area of HII. I found conflicting information on the designation of this object.
