Description

The elephant trunk nebula IC1396 consists of low interstellar hydrogen and oxygen gas with a high proportion of dust. The actual elephant trunk (vdB 142) is a dark, dense globule with a brightly lit edge (IC1396A). The bright edge is the surface of a dark cloud that is ionized by the bright blue star HD 206267, which lies somewhat in its center. The inner region of the nebula (OIII), shown in blue in this photo, is also ionized by this massive star, except for other dense globules, by its strong ultraviolet radiation.

Another bright giant star is the garnet star on the grounf, whose yellowish light is visible on the hydrogen region on the loeer edge of the nebula. The entire image section is dominated by dust outside the nebula in which there are thousands upon thousands of stars of different luminosity and thus colors.
