NGC 7822 and Ced 214 in Cepheus

This area of sky in the constellation Cepheus is home to several interesting objects. In this image is a small area of intense oxygen and hydrogen emission, catalogued as Sh2-171 and Cederblad 214, and is located slightly up and left of center. Included in this area is a small cluster of very new stars which goes by the name Berkley 59. The outer rims of nebulosity shown in this image are largely hydrogen and sulfur emissions.

It is an active star-forming region with very visible pillars of gas which are quite interesting to see. Unfortunately in this case, the instrument used was a widefield 70mm refractor so resolution is not sufficient to show fine detail.

This was the last image of mine acquired during late 2020 and had been sitting “on the shelf” since. I’m glad I got around to processing it as the data turned out to be pretty good. That is, except for the funky corner stars due to inaccurate focal reducer backfocus adjustment.

Processing was 98% performed using PixInsight using a tone-mapping workflow, common with false color narrowband images such this one. Photoshop CC was used for minor color adjustment.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
