Description

Messier 94 is a spiral galaxy in the constellation Canes Venatici. The galaxy appears to have two ring structures along with a faint outer disk. The inner ring contains areas with strong star formation (magenta colored areas). The outer ring is actually a complex structure of spiral arms. Originally, the faint outer disk was thought to be the result of accretion of another smaller galaxy. More recently, it was also proposed that oval distortion of the inner ring may have caused the outer disk.
