Description

Jupiter from the backyard early on August 23, 2021, a few days after opposition with moons Callisto (far left), Europa, Io and Ganymede (right, bottom). The image is inverted, as seen through the refractor at roughly the same perspective as x350 / 2.5mm eyepiece magnification. Jupiter is bulging a bit at the waist in this shot (planetary bulge formation) and it's got gas, but it's about 4.6 billion years old so it does what it wants.

Shot this with an ASI 462MC camera on a Vixen FL90s 810mm APO Flourite doublet with a Baader Zeiss BBHS T2 1.25" diagonal. For this image, taken around midnight, I applied a Baader UV/IR filter to the color camera, shooting in .SER Raw 16, 544x548 capture area – with 425 gain and exposure at 0.000192. This shot below was taking the top 15% of 2 minutes of data via AutoStakkert!. Following this, I denoised / brightened / contrasted in DxO PhotoLab. I added an artificial black to prevent camera noise adding distraction in this presentation. Since the capture area was so small, I combined in a similar shot for Ganymede on the same night, bottom right with different framing.

This is a first Jupiter capture with this camera and scope, so since there is room to improve, please feel free to leave constructive comments. The moons are not in focus, so given enough time I would have focused and shot just the moons separately - but at least we see the formation in this shot.
