Description

The Helping Hand Nebula in Cassiopeia contains a large amount of dust, dark nebulae and reflection nebulae.  Near the center is the star SU Cass which is a mag. 5.94 Cepheid variable. SU Cass is 19 times larger than our sun, 1289 light years distant and illuminates the blue reflection nebula VdB 9.  The star RZ Cass shown at the lower right is a mag. 6.26 main sequence star.  RZ Cass is an eclipsing variable star and 219 light years distant. The bluish nebulosity surrounding it is listed as VdB 7 and is illuminated by a mag. 11 star to the lower left of RZ Cass.  Several dark nebulae comprise the "open hand" portion in the center of the image.  The dark area of the "hand" comprising the top "finger" is LDN 1357 and below it at the "palm" is LDN 1355. The long dark nebula to the right of the "hand" is designated LDN 1358.  (Astronomy Magazine, Jan 2022)   Upon closer inspection, several smaller reflection nebulae are scattered about in the image.  The elongated blue reflection nebula on the left around the star HD 17443 is listed in Simbad as GN 02.47.1.

A starless luminance image is included as a revision.
