Description

This barred lenticular ring galaxy is located 25 million light years away in the constellation of Ursa Major at a declination of +69 degrees.  It is a magnitude 12 galaxy which spans 5 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 35,000 light years.  We are seeing this galaxy at about 30 degrees form edge-on.

The small white core is surrounded by a bright yellow inner disk.  Two ansae are seen at each end of the “bar”, even though a bar doesn’t really exist here.  I find it interesting that the major axis of the disk is not at right angles to a line connecting the ansae.  The outer disk, forming a ring, is dim and diffuse.
