Description

I wanted to try to get an image of "The Pup" - Sirius' white dwarf companion. To do this, I heavily processed a crop of the following image:

I took this image of Sirius, duplicated it in GIMP, subtracted the copy from the original, then blurred the subtracted copy. By tweaking the blur I am convinced "The Pup" has become visible!

It is difficult to determine where the center of Sirius is supposed to be given the odd shape, but I made my best guess. I measure the bluish little blob that I suspect to be The Pup to be about PA 65° (about 10 o'clock), just beyond the edge of the bright ring artifact, lying about 33 pixels from the center. According to SkySafari, it should be at PA 68.6° and about 30 pixels. Given the uncertainties involved in my image, I am convinced I've found it!

I think I should be able to get a much better image of this by recording a video of the star and using lucky imaging. I'm not yet sure how to do this, but it is now squarely on my list of future goals.
