Description

During my April 2021 astrophotography trip to Casitas de Gila, Gila, New Mexico, I imaged the globular cluster M5 in the constellation Serpens. The Rose is a large and bright globular cluster. I captured M5 as a third target in a sequence each night. Luminance, Red, Green and Blue filter subframes were taken from about 2:00AM until 5:00AM. Since imaging time was short, a limited amount of data, especially color, were collected.

M5 contains at least 100,000 and possibly up to 500,000 gravitationally bound stars and it is on the order of 13 billion years old. It is about 24,500 light years away, orbiting the core of the Milky Way. The cluster is about 165 light years across.
