Description

NGC 2685, a.k.a. the Helix Galaxy, is a (long name from Wiki) "lenticular and polar ring Seyfert Type 2 galaxy" locates in the Constellation Ursa Major. It is a rare polar ring galaxy with a rather unique apparence, as there are gas, dust and material orbiting in rings perpendicular to the plane of a flat galactic disk. It is believed that such behavior is formed when two galaxies gravitationally interact with each other. and the dual-axes galaxy shape could be caused by the chance capture of material from another galaxy by a disk galaxy. The dark dust lanes in front of the disk galaxy is slightly highlighted in this rendition to reveal this unique configuration.
