Description

The dominant galaxy in this image is NGC 4559. It is classified SAB(rs)cd - barred galaxy with spiral and ring features. It is about 24 to 36 million light years distant. NGC 4559 is a member of the Coma I group and several larger groups [CHM2007] LDC 709 and LDC 867. Also in this image are galaxies IC 3598 and IC 3592. The latter (IC 3592) is also known as NGC 4559A - but it is much more distant (at 334 million light years) than the main NGC 4559 galaxy and is not interacting. There are numerous other background galaxies in this image - some of which are indicated in the annotated image. These galaxies range in distance from 333 to 1,447 million light years distant. These galaxies and some of the brighter stars are identified in the annotated image. Horizontal FOV is approximately 38 arc minutes (0.81 arcsec/pix image scale on the full size image).
