Description

ACO 1656 (or Abell 1656) contains thousands of galaxies, and is visible nearly the galactic north pole, nearly unobscured by any dust, gas or stars of our milky way.

Dominated by two elliptical giants, NGC 4889 and NGC 4874, exceeding 250 thousand light years in diameter and much more massive than any other galaxy even in the Virgo supercluster, this cluster is located nearly 300 mio light years (Mly) away from our Milky way.

Even two much more distant galaxy clusters are clearly visible, ACO 1661 and ACO 1641.

I wanted to image this beautiful galaxy cluster in spring, before midnight twilights begin at our latitudes (52° north).

This telescopic view is just to show the usable field of the RASA8 (with imaging resolution of nearly 2"/pixel): a circle of around 3.3 degrees in diameter.
