Description

IC10 is an irregular dwarf starburst galaxy located in the direction of the Constellation Cassiopeia at a distance of 2.3 Million Light-Years, has a diameter of approximately 5,000 Light-Years , and is a member of our Local Group. It was discovered in 1887, and is somewhat hidden by the gas and dust in the plane of the Milky Way, causing it to be rather dim and emit a reddish/yellow hue. It has a large number of Wolf-Rayet stars which add to the dusty environment. It seems to be equidistant between the large galaxies of Andromeda and the Triangulum Galaxy and probably is in a subgroup associated with M31, the Andromeda Galaxy. It has a sizeable envelope of hydrogen gas which rotates counter to the galaxy rotation. As a starburst (forming stars a high rate), it is the only such galaxy in the local group.
