Description

This object is a reflection nebula located 1500 light years away in the constellation of Perseus at a declination of +39 degrees. This nebula spans 7 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a span of 3 light years.

The source star for this nebula is the variable star XY Persei, which is the bright bluish-white star at the center of the image. This star varies in brightness from the 9th magnitude down to the 11th magnitude.

The larger dust cloud surrounding the blue nebula is the dark nebula LDN 1442. Towards the bottom of the image is the bright orange carbon star, Lee 162.
