Description

As the title suggests, this was more an experiment than anything else. I wanted to see if it is possible to shoot broadband in the area of the sky that is for me probably close if not completely Bortle 8. I expected strong gradients, and yes, I was not "disappointed" to find them.

I love the area around Rho Oph, to really enjoy it a much much shorter focal length is needed, but I did not want to switch the setup "just for that". So which part sticks out? Well, I think the one that I chose is maybe the area to target at 925mm, I tried once before the area around Aldebaran, but that did not turn out well at all.

The Hα part in this image is minimal, was more to get a slightly better contrast and resolution into the image, do not think though that it made a huge difference, at least I could not tell when I looked at before and after addition.

All images were shot very early in the morning. First: I know that NOW the weather will be (and indeed is) miserable, so I need to try those "summer" targets in Spring. Second: the early morning hours are definitely the darkest, so I had a slight chance to get a decent image out of it. Have a look as well to the original image, showing the full frame of this area.

Was fun to process a different target than galaxies, have to throw in here and there some of the nebulas to make me feel better 😊.
