Description

The Rosette Nebula is a large region of ionised hydrogen and other material. It is about 5 200 light years away and about 130 light years across. The open cluster NGC 2244 lies at the centre of the nebula and its stars have been formed from the material in the nebula. In fact star formation is still going on. The open area at the centre of the nebula seems to have been formed as a result of radiation pressure from the hot new stars in the cluster.

The Rosette nebula is a large object in the sky, being almost 3 times the diameter of the full moon in apparent size.

I tried several times to acquire good data for an image of the Rosette nebula, but had lots frames with aircraft trails and so on. Eventually I had enough for this image.
